Neck and Back Pain Q&A

What might be causing my neck and back pain?

Your spine plays a critical role in your body, enabling mobility and protecting your spinal cord. This flexible column of bones contains many joints, each of which relies on nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and connective tissues to function properly.

A problem with any of these components can cause serious neck and back pain. Traumatic injury and sports injuries are common causes of spinal pain, and muscle injuries are also a leading cause.

In some cases, the spine can shift out of proper alignment. This places undue pressure on your nerves, creating significant pain you can feel in your neck, shoulders, back, and even in your hips and knees.

Are there ways to treat neck and back pain without drug therapy?

There are certainly conditions in which medication is the best treatment option, but drug therapy comes at a cost. Every medication carries a list of potential side effects, and many can negatively interact with drugs you take for chronic health issues like diabetes or hypertension.

When it comes to pain medications, there is also the risk of addiction. More and more people are turning away from drug therapy as the first course of action in managing pain.

Fortunately, there are treatments that can help resolve neck and back pain by prompting your body to do what it does best, which is to heal and regenerate.

What kinds of options can help resolve neck and back pain?

Spinal manipulation is an option that can restore optimal spinal alignment without invasive surgical procedures or medications. The process uses hands-on techniques to address areas of misalignment in your spine. These techniques are especially powerful in treating lower back pain, but there are also approaches for cervical spine (upper neck issues).

Healing PT offers spinal decompression, an approach that uses special equipment to gently stretch your spine to relieve abnormal compression between vertebrae. The practice uses a state-of-the-art spinal decompression unit for these treatments, which last 30-45 minutes and are not painful.

Graston Technique® therapy uses a range of six metal, hand-held instruments to manually alter scar tissue and tightened fascia tissue in the area of your spine. It will likely take multiple treatments over a period of weeks to achieve optimal results.

Physical therapy is also a powerful tool in treating neck and back pain. Mr. Becker works closely with you to increase your strength and flexibility, and to improve posture and ergonomic conditions at home, or in the workplace.
