Dry Needling Q&A

What are trigger points and how do they develop?

Trigger points are sensitive areas of muscle tissue or in the fascia (the connective tissue that surrounds and supports every organ, bone, blood vessel, and muscle in your body).

While researchers are still learning how and why certain areas of tissue become hypersensitized, some conditions are known to increase the risk of trigger points, including:

  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Recent injury
  • Repetitive activities at work or in recreation
  • History of poor posture
  • Sleep disruptions

If you experience frequent, severe, or persistent muscle pain, it’s time to come in for a diagnostic workup to see if trigger points may be the cause.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a technique that can help with muscle pain. Mr. Becker uses hands-on techniques to detect trigger points beneath your skin. Then, he uses sterile treatment needles to stimulate the trigger point. This process encourages blood flow to the area and can also help tight muscle tissues relax.

In some cases, muscle tissues treated during it will go through something called a local twitch response (where Mr. Becker will be able to understand how the treatment is working).

A response indicates that the treatment is working well and often delivers immediate pain relief.

Is dry needling painful?

Most people don’t find dry needling uncomfortable. In many cases, they are already experiencing pain in the treatment area and barely notice the sensation of the dry needle.

If you are concerned about discomfort, a topical numbing cream can be applied prior to your treatment to reduce sensation in the area. While some people experience a noticeable reduction in pain after just one session, most need several visits to achieve optimal results. A degree of soreness is normal in the hours after dry needling and will quickly fade.

Finding muscle relief and healing starts with the right treatments. Mr. Becker is ready to listen to your needs and goals to help develop a customized treatment plan for your muscle pain, so you can move and feel better.
