Graston Q&A

What is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy that uses specially-designed metal instruments to assist in breaking down scar tissue and stretching certain connective tissues to ease pain and tension.

Research shows that this approach activates certain nerve fibers, creating a neurological benefit. The Technique is a good option for addressing pain or other issues linked to the ligaments, tendons, muscles, and fascia.

There are several other types of therapy that use instruments to massage or scrape the skin and underlying tissues. At Healing PT, Graston Technique Therapy is a preferred treatment because it comes with a long history of being safe and effective.

What are some benefits of Graston therapy?

To gain access to Technique tools, practitioners have to go through an in-depth training program. This well-established protocol has been embraced by universities and clinical settings for more than 25 years, and more than 43,000 clinicians have gone through the program.

Some benefits of the Technique therapy include:

  • Reduced treatment time as compared to other therapies
  • Less reliance on anti-inflammatory medications
  • Quicker return to pain-free activities
  • Potential to resolve musculoskeletal issues once thought to be permanent

Each individual will have a unique experience with this Technique therapy. Many people find wonderful results that they introduce friends and family to the practice in the hopes that they too will achieve similar outcomes.

What should I expect during this therapy?

Most people benefit from a series of sessions spread over several weeks. You’ll likely be advised to engage in a brief period of cardiovascular activity just before your appointments.

There are six unique Graston Technique tools used during sessions. When you arrive, Mr. Becker chooses the proper tool for the area of focus and moves the device over the surface of your skin. This process is called scanning, and helps determine areas of injured fibrotic tissue.

A cross-friction massage technique and targeted pressure creates very minute trauma to the treatment area. This process prompts your body to swiftly increase circulation to the area, which enhances your healing function.

You may find this technique therapy to be mildly uncomfortable, especially during your initial session. Each area usually receives around one minute of manipulation before the tool is moved to a different area of tissue. Incorporating stretching, exercise, and strength training into your treatment process can boost your results and reduce recovery soreness.
