Taping Q&A

What is kinesiology taping?

Kinesiology tape, while currently enjoying quite a resurgence, has been in use since the late 1970s. First developed by a Japanese chiropractor, kinesiology tape was the answer to tape products that didn’t flex and stretch with the skin.

Today, more than 50 types of kinesiology tape products are on the market. These tapes are very stretchy, yet also durable. They are often waterproof and can withstand sweat and showering. You can usually wear the tape for 3-5 days before it needs to be changed.

Kinesiology tape has a slight recoil property, and once applied to your skin, it lifts it slightly. That creates a small space between your skin and the underlying tissues.

What kinds of musculoskeletal issues can kinesiology taping improve?

Some research shows that it increases space within certain joints. More space in your knee or shoulder joint can reduce the risk of irritation within that area.

Another theory is that taping alters the way your sensory nervous system transmits pain signals between body and brain. The lifting effect of kinesiology tape lifts your skin above knotted or contracted muscle tissue, creating a decompression effect near trigger points.

Kinesiology tape can also enhance blood flow and lymphatic fluid circulation. That small amount of additional space beneath the surface of your skin alters the pressure gradient in that area, enhancing the flow of blood and lymphatic fluid.

How do I ensure I’m using the proper taping techniques?

Healing PT offers some of the best kinesiology tape on the market. More importantly, Mr. Becker can discuss your treatment goals to create a customized taping routine just for you.

You’ll learn how to apply the tape in the proper area, and how to replace it when it begins to lift away from your skin. It is a great way to enhance physical therapy or give you an extra advantage during athletic performance training.

Taping can provide additional support to certain joints, improve your posture, and enhance muscle performance.
